When
you feel afraid: Psalm
23:4
Psalm
23
Even though I walk through the valley of
the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are
with me; your rod and your staff, they
comfort me.
When
you feel impatient: Psalm 40
Psalm
40
1 I waited patiently for the Lord ;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear
and put their trust in the Lord .
4 Blessed is the man
who makes the Lord his trust,
who does not look to the proud,
to those who turn aside to false gods.
5 Many, O Lord my God,
are the wonders you have done.
The things you planned for us
no one can recount to you;
were I to speak and tell of them,
they would be too many to declare.
6 Sacrifice and offering you did not
desire,
but my ears you have pierced
burnt offerings and sin offerings
you did not require.
7 Then I said, "Here I am, I have
come-
it is written about me in the scroll.
8 I desire to do your will, O my God;
your law is within my heart."
9 I proclaim righteousness in the great
assembly;
I do not seal my lips,
as you know, O Lord .
10 I do not hide your righteousness in my
heart;
I speak of your faithfulness and
salvation.
I do not conceal your love and your truth
from the great assembly.
11 Do not withhold your mercy from me, O
Lord ;
may your love and your truth always
protect me.
12 For troubles without number surround
me;
my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot
see.
They are more than the hairs of my head,
and my heart fails within me.
13 Be pleased, O Lord , to save me;
O Lord , come quickly to help me.
14 May all who seek to take my life
be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
be turned back in disgrace.
15 May those who say to me, "Aha!
Aha!"
be appalled at their own shame.
16 But may all who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation always
say,
"The Lord be exalted!"
17 Yet I am poor and needy;
may the Lord think of me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
O my God, do not delay.
When
you feel anxious: Matthew
6:25-34
25
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry
about your life, what you will eat or
drink; or about your body, what you will
wear. Is not life more important than
food, and the body more important than
clothes?
26 Look at the birds of the air; they do
not sow or reap or store away in barns,
and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not much more valuable than they?
27 Who of you by worrying can add a single
hour to his life ?
28 "And why do you worry about
clothes? See how the lilies of the field
grow. They do not labor or spin.
29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in
all his splendor was dressed like one of
these.
30 If that is how God clothes the grass of
the field, which is here today and
tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he
not much more clothe you, O you of little
faith?
31 So do not worry, saying, `What shall we
eat?' or `What shall we drink?' or `What
shall we wear?'
32 For the pagans run after all these
things, and your heavenly Father knows
that you need them.
33 But seek first his kingdom and his
righteousness, and all these things will
be given to you as well.
34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow,
for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each
day has enough trouble of its own.
When
you feel you are slipping: Psalm
51:1-4
1
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your
unfailing love; according to your great
compassion blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me
from my sin.
3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin
is always before me.
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and
done what is evil in your sight, so that
you are proved right when you speak and
justified when you judge.
When
you feel bereaved: Matthew 5:4
4
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will
be comforted.
When
you feel bitter or angry: I
Corinthians 13
1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of
angels, but have not love, I am only a
resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can
fathom all mysteries and all knowledge,
and if I have a faith that can move
mountains, but have not love, I am
nothing.
3 If I give all I possess to the poor and
surrender my body to the flames, but have
not love, I gain nothing.
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does
not envy, it does not boast, it is not
proud.
5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking,
it is not easily angered, it keeps no
record of wrongs.
6 Love does not delight in evil but
rejoices with the truth.
7 It always protects, always trusts,
always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails. But where there are
prophecies, they will cease; where there
are tongues, they will be stilled; where
there is knowledge, it will pass away.
9 For we know in part and we prophesy in
part,
10 but when perfection comes, the
imperfect disappears.
11 When I was a child, I talked like a
child, I thought like a child, I reasoned
like a child. When I became a man, I put
childish ways behind me.
12 Now we see but a poor reflection as in
a mirror; then we shall see face to face.
Now I know in part; then I shall know
fully, even as I am fully known.
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope
and love. But the greatest of these is
love.
When
you feel defeated: Romans 8:31-39
31
What, then, shall we say in response to
this? If God is for us, who can be against
us?
32 He who did not spare his own Son, but
gave him up for us all--how will he not
also, along with him, graciously give us
all things?
33 Who will bring any charge against those
whom God has chosen? It is God who
justifies.
34 Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus,
who died--more than that, who was raised
to life--is at the right hand of God and
is also interceding for us.
35 Who shall separate us from the love of
Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or
persecution or famine or nakedness or
danger or sword?
36 As it is written: "For your sake
we face death all day long; we are
considered as sheep to be
slaughtered."
37 No, in all these things we are more
than conquerors through him who loved us.
38 For I am convinced that neither death
nor life, neither angels nor demons,
neither the present nor the future, nor
any powers,
39 neither height nor depth, nor anything
else in all creation, will be able to
separate us from the love of God that is
in Christ Jesus our Lord.
When
you are feeling depressed: Psalm 34
1
I will extol the LORD at all times; his
praise will always be on my lips.
2 My soul will boast in the LORD; let the
afflicted hear and rejoice.
3 Glorify the LORD with me; let us exalt
his name together.
4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me;
he delivered me from all my fears.
5 Those who look to him are radiant; their
faces are never covered with shame.
6 This poor man called, and the LORD heard
him; he saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the LORD encamps around
those who fear him, and he delivers them.
8 Taste and see that the LORD is good;
blessed is the man who takes refuge in
him.
9 Fear the LORD, you his saints, for those
who fear him lack nothing.
10 The lions may grow weak and hungry, but
those who seek the LORD lack no good
thing.
11 Come, my children, listen to me; I will
teach you the fear of the LORD.
12 Whoever of you loves life and desires
to see many good days,
13 keep your tongue from evil and your
lips from speaking lies.
14 Turn from evil and do good; seek peace
and pursue it.
15 The eyes of the LORD are on the
righteous and his ears are attentive to
their cry;
16 the face of the LORD is against those
who do evil, to cut off the memory of them
from the earth.
17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD
hears them; he delivers them from all
their troubles.
18 The LORD is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
19 A righteous man may have many troubles,
but the LORD delivers him from them all;
20 he protects all his bones, not one of
them will be broken.
21 Evil will slay the wicked; the foes of
the righteous will be condemned.
22 The LORD redeems his servants; no one
will be condemned who takes refuge in him.
When
you feel discouraged: Psalm 23
1
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in
want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he restores my soul. He guides me in
paths of righteousness for his name's
sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of
the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the
presence of my enemies. You anoint my head
with oil; my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life, and I will dwell
in the house of the LORD forever.
When
you have doubt: Matthew 8:26
26
He replied, "You of little faith, why
are you so afraid?" Then he got up
and rebuked the winds and the waves, and
it was completely calm.
When
you are facing a crisis: Psalm 121
1
I lift up my eyes to the hills-- where
does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the LORD, the Maker
of heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot slip-- he who
watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel will
neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The LORD watches over you-- the LORD is
your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day, nor
the moon by night.
7 The LORD will keep you from all harm--
he will watch over your life;
8 the LORD will watch over your coming and
going both now and forevermore.
When
your faith is failing: Hebrews
11:1-9
1
Now faith is being sure of what we hope
for and certain of what we do not see.
2 This is what the ancients were commended
for.
3 By faith we understand that the universe
was formed at God's command, so that what
is seen was not made out of what was
visible.
4 By faith Abel offered God a better
sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was
commended as a righteous man, when God
spoke well of his offerings. And by faith
he still speaks, even though he is dead.
5 By faith Enoch was taken from this life,
so that he did not experience death; he
could not be found, because God had taken
him away. For before he was taken, he was
commended as one who pleased God.
6 And without faith it is impossible to
please God, because anyone who comes to
him must believe that he exists and that
he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
7 By faith Noah, when warned about things
not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to
save his family. By his faith he condemned
the world and became heir of the
righteousness that comes by faith.
8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a
place he would later receive as his
inheritance, obeyed and went, even though
he did not know where he was going.
9 By faith he made his home in the
promised land like a stranger in a foreign
country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac
and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the
same promise.
When
friends fail you: Psalm 41:9-13
Psalm
41
9 Even my close friend, whom I trusted, he
who shared my bread, has lifted up his
heel against me.
10 But you, O LORD, have mercy on me;
raise me up, that I may repay them.
11 I know that you are pleased with me,
for my enemy does not triumph over me.
12 In my integrity you uphold me and set
me in your presence forever.
13 Praise be to the LORD, the God of
Israel, from everlasting to everlasting.
Amen and Amen.
When
you feel lonely: Hebrews 13:5, Psalm
23:1-6
Hebrews
13
5 Keep your lives free from the love of
money and be content with what you have,
because God has said, "Never will I
leave you; never will I forsake you."
Psalm
23
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be
in want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he restores my soul. He guides me in
paths of righteousness for his name's
sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of
the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are
with me; your rod and your staff, they
comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the
presence of my enemies. You anoint my head
with oil; my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life, and I will dwell
in the house of the LORD forever.
When
you're needing God's protection: Psalm
27:1-6
1
The LORD is my light and my salvation--
whom shall I fear? The LORD is the
stronghold of my life-- of whom shall I be
afraid?
2 When evil men advance against me to
devour my flesh, when my enemies and my
foes attack me, they will stumble and
fall.
3 Though an army besiege me, my heart will
not fear; though war break out against me,
even then will I be confident.
4 One thing I ask of the LORD, this is
what I seek: that I may dwell in the house
of the LORD all the days of my life, to
gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to
seek him in his temple.
5 For in the day of trouble he will keep
me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me
in the shelter of his tabernacle and set
me high upon a rock.
6 Then my head will be exalted above the
enemies who surround me; at his tabernacle
will I sacrifice with shouts of joy; I
will sing and make music to the LORD.

you need guidance: Psalm 32:8;
Proverbs 3:5, 6

way you should go; I will counsel you and

3
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he
will make your paths straight.
When
you are in need of peace: John 14:1-4;
John 16:33
John
14
1 "Do not let your hearts be
troubled. Trust in God ; trust also in me.
2 In my Father's house are many rooms; if
it were not so, I would have told you. I
am going there to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you,
I will come back and take you to be with
me that you also may be where I am.
4 You know the way to the place where I am
going."
John
16
33 "I have told you these things, so
that in me you may have peace. In this
world you will have trouble. But take
heart! I have overcome the world."
